Century Memorial

Wordsworth Thompson, whose artistic education was completed in Paris under such distinguished artists as Gleyre, Lambinet and Passini, the latter of whom was instrumental in forming his style, was recognized as one of the most finished artists of his school, whose work will be more and more appreciated as time goes on. No one caught the spirit of our colonial period more perfectly than he, and his historical pictures were distinguished for accuracy of detail, beauty of color, and a preservation of the sentiment that surrounded that interesting time in our history to an unusual degree. His work in Morocco, Algiers and Spain exhibited the movement and charm of oriental life in a masterly and attractive manner. He was a most useful and energetic member here, serving on the committee of building the new Club house, on the Art Committee, and sparing neither time nor labor in his devotion to the interests of The Century. Upon festive occasions he was always a prominent figure, and his presence and influence here will be sadly missed.
