Thomas Thacher

In his college days, Thomas Thacher was a leader of his class at Yale, standing high in scholarship and receiving the highest Society honors. He was also a prize man in debate, where the peculiar powers which he afterward applied to legal practice and research were perhaps first foreshadowed. Associated early in his professional career with Ashbel Green in the preparation of his notable work on corporation law entitled Ultra Vires, he rose very high in his profession as an authority on that branch of law, on which he wrote numerous well-known and often-cited monographs.

Mr. Thacher had been President of the Yale Club, of the University Club, and Vice-President of the Bar Association. His high legal repute had more than once brought him invitations to accept judicial office, but he preferred his private practice. His stimulating conversation, combined with great attractiveness of manner, made him a welcome visitor at the Century.
