Andrew Heermance Smith was graduated from Union College and the College of Physicians and Surgeons, and studied for two years in Germany. He entered the army in 1861 and had a distinguished career, resigning in 1868 with the brevet rank of Major. From that time he practised his profession in New York City, acting as Surgeon and Consulting Physician to the principal hospitals. He was Vice-President of the Post-Graduate Medical School and Hospital, and in 1903–4 he was President of the New York Academy of Medicine. He was a member of a long list of Medical Societies and the author of numerous monographs. In 1907 he retired from practice and made his residence in Geneva, New York.
