Platt P. Ryder was a well-known portrait painter, a pupil of Bonnat, whose artistic tastes and skill were recognized and appreciated by a large circle of patrons and admirers. He was the founder of the Brooklyn Academy of Design, but had of late years lived and painted in New York, and with such close application that his health suffered as the result. He was a quiet, unassuming man, especially happy in his home, and was held in the highest esteem by his friends and acquaintances.
