John Gardner Perry, after graduating from the Harvard Medical School, served as surgeon throughout the Civil War and became widely known through his book, Letters from a Soldier, a collection of letters sent to his wife during the war. After the Civil War Dr. Perry established himself in New York City, where he maintained a highly successful practice for many years.
