James Pedersen. [Born] 1864. Physician.
Professionally, he was a urologist who practiced in New York City for fifty-seven years, member of all the high-ranking organizations of his specialty. A confidence-inspiring man, friendly and out-going, he had a large practice and among his professional colleagues he will be remembered as a deviser of techniques and instrumentation for the work of his particular field.
For many years he was active in the New York Society for Suppression of Vice, and, through the Prohibition years, as Chairman of the Committee of Fourteen, was the efficient and unspectacular terror of the speakeasy as an agent of prostitution.
It is said of him that “he was one of the decent fellows who always vote the conservative ticket and thus prevent our heroes from upsetting the boat. He was not one to shout his opinions and he is not easily quotable.” But, says a colleague, “thank Heaven for men like him, always on deck to keep our right-side-up.”
Such a good and useful man was our friend for thirty-seven years.
