Century Memorial
Edward Bement, during his active life in New York as member of the New York Stock Exchange, was a frequenter of the Century, where he had many friends. Since his retirement from business in 1902, he had passed much of his time abroad, making his home in Paris; returning to New York each autumn, however, for a visit of some length. From his early days he was a keen collector of books and prints and, while in Paris, where he formed intimate associations with art lovers, he extended his amateur activities to other fields. A rare collection of the “Philobiblon” of Richard de Bury, bequeathed to him by his friend, Hamilton Cole, he presented, materially enlarged, to the Yale University Library; and to Yale in other ways he was a generous benefactor.
