The name of James R. Osgood will always be familiar to the American public, as associated with one of the most famous publishing houses in the country, which won a wide reputation from its connection with the names of Emerson, Longfellow, Hawthorne, Lowell, Holmes, Whittier, Mrs. Stowe, and many other famous American and European authors, and as the first publishers of the Atlantic Monthly and Every Saturday. He was a man of liberal education, and from his familiarity with books and authors for many years he drew from them the subtle charm that clings to bookish men.
