George Livingston Nichols

George Livingston Nichols took habitual pride in the fact that the partnership consisting of himself and another well-known Centurion [Arthur H. Masten] was the oldest law firm in New York in which the original partners were still practicing. Its career had lasted nearly half a century. During all of his professional career, Nichols was what is known as an office lawyer. He was an indefatigable worker, had conspicuous ability and sound legal knowledge, advised many clients successfully and wisely. His culture was broad and his tastes catholic. He acquired a fine private library and an interesting collection of prints and etchings. To the Century he was perhaps not personally well known; his retiring disposition induced him to spend his leisure time at home or in intercourse with intimate associates. But he travelled extensively and, in addition to his literary, artistic and musical tastes, had a keen sense of humor, was a delightful companion and a generous friend.
