Century Memorial

Thomas Lowry was a native of Illinois, educated at the common school and the college known as Lombard University in Galesburg. He began life as a lawyer, but soon developed into a far-sighted financier. The enterprises he undertook were successful and much of his time was spent at the seats of the great banking interests. He became a member here when fifty-eight and was for eight years an occasional visitor in his leisure hours. In the city of Minneapolis, where he lived, his business activities were so extended and creative that his public life became noteworthy and he was a force of the first importance behind the machinery of state. Munificent in his benevolence, courageous as a city-builder, astute and witty in his intercourse with men, no man was better known or more highly esteemed among those who do the great work of the world. Though often named for conspicuous office, he never accepted one, content to be a great American citizen.
