Century Memorial

James Edgerton Learned was a familiar figure in the rooms of The Century during the last ten years of his life. He entered on his career as a journalist in this city in the early ’60’s as one of the brilliant staff of The World under Mr. Marble. Later, he was the musical critic of The Tribune, and was for some years, before his retirement to take up literary work, the managing editor of The Evening Post. He was a thoughtful and intelligent writer, of native refinement of mind and character, a man of truly “gentle” culture and ideals. He was deeply interested in the affairs of the Protestant Episcopal Church, was for a long time a Trustee of the Trinity Church Association, and, at the time of his death, Chairman of the Trustees of the Church Club.
