Century Memorial
Abraham Riker Lawrence was for twenty-eight years one of the esteemed justices of the Supreme Court of the State of New York. His was a long and, one may add, a genial career at the bar and upon the bench, where his friendly manner and excellent decisions won the affection and respect of those who had the fortune to practise before him. Many years ago Tammany made him its candidate for the Mayoralty of New York; but before then he had gained a reputation for balance, fairness, and learning as a member of the State Constitutional Convention of 1867. He had an expert knowledge of the New York tax laws, and compiled a book upon this subject. A popular and genial companion and grandson of Captain Lawrence of the famous Chesapeake, he was twice elected president of the St. Nicholas Society.
