George F. Barker was a native of Charlestown, Massachusetts, a graduate of the Sheffield Scientific School in 1858, and successively professor in Wheaton College, Yale Medical School, and the University of Pennsylvania. He received many degrees in course and honorary and the Legion of Honor of France. He was exceptionally active outside of the University in various public services and in the social life of the community. Within the University he stood for the highest standard of scholarship and made the impression of a man of large ability who knew his subject thoroughly. He was always genial, kind-hearted, and responsive.
