James Putnam Kimball, an eminent geologist and mining engineer, and one who did scientific work upon many important surveys and expeditions. He served through our civil war on the staffs of McClellan, Burnside, Meade, and Hooker, and was brevetted Major for gallantry in the Wilderness Campaign. From 1885 to 1888 he made an admirable Director of the Mint, to which prominent post he was appointed by President Cleveland.
