Archivist’s Notes
He was first elected in 1854 under his birth name, John Campbell White, and ostensibly resigned sometime between 1860 and 1864. In 1867 he legally changed his name to Goldsborough Banyer (in order to receive a family inheritance on his mother’s side) and he was reinstated under this new name in October 1867 with a new set of proposers, Frederick E. Gibert and Henry R. Winthrop. His portrait in the Member Photograph Albums Collection is captioned with his original election year but with the later version of his legal name. Brother-in-law of John Steward Jr.; uncle of John Steward Jr.
