Century Memorial
Francis Sedgwick Bangs was conspicuous equally in the city’s legal practice, in the Episcopal Church and, for a time, in the local councils of the Republican party. Outside his professional work he will be remembered with especially grateful clearness for his twenty years of active labor as Trustee of Columbia University, his Alma Mater. Serving on the committees of finance and education at a time, following his election in 1900, when the problems of each committee were peculiarly complex because of the circumstances of the day and the bold policies which those circumstances required, he brought to the work a combination of far-sightedness and conservative judgment which did much towards solving the unusual difficulties of the task.
