Century Memorial

James Ramsay Hunt had an international reputation for knowledge of the physiology and medical aspects of the nervous system. His keen clinical observation brought to light several conditions previously unrecognized. His colleagues in that branch of medical science testify that his researches on “paralysis agitans” did much to reveal the structure and function of the basal ganglia of the brain; about which, before his work, little was known. He was unassuming, a man of great natural dignity yet whimsical humor. His great stature, the slow rhythm of his movements and the always-present mien of dignity led one of his professional friends to sum up his physical aspect as Olympian. In his personality and life work there was fine distinction.
