Ernest Howe performed in his life career a somewhat unusually diversified range of public service. By choice a practical geologist, holding the Ph.D. degree from Harvard, active during many years in the United States Geological Survey and serving as official geologist to the first Isthmian Canal Commission, he also occupied during a series of years the place, first of assemblyman, then of senator, in the Connecticut Legislature, and was president of his home-town bank.
