Edward Singleton Holden was a man of marked abilities and personality, and an astronomer of eminence. A graduate of West Point, he was for a time instructor there, and he closed his life as its Librarian. In the years between the opening and the close of his career, he was Astronomer at the Naval Observatory in Washington, Professor of Astronomy at the University of Wisconsin, President of the University of California, and Director of the Lick Observatory. He was the author of books upon his subject, a member of learned societies, and the recipient of honorary degrees.
