Century Memorial

Judge Henry Hilton was in active practice as a lawyer in this city from 1846, the date of his admission to the bar, until his election to the Court of Common Pleas, a position which during his term he filled with integrity and ability. On his retirement in 1863, he resumed the practice of his profession, and subsequently became the private and confidential adviser of A. T. Stewart, to whose extensive interests he was exclusively devoted. As executor of Mr. Stewart’s will he managed the large estate committed to his charge until the death of Mrs. Stewart, under whose will he was also appointed executor, and became a noted and prominent figure in financial and business circles.

He was possessed of a large fortune, was a liberal patron of the fine arts, making notable gifts to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and spent the later years of his life on his extensive estate at Saratoga, where he died.
