Richard S. Hayes ranked among the leading railroad men of our country. Graduating as a civil engineer from the University of Pennsylvania, his first work was in the Empire State of the South, Texas. He was the Engineer of Construction of the Texas Pacific, and after a successful receivership, President of the Texas International. Subsequently he was President of the St. Paul and Duluth, Vice-President of the Missouri Pacific, President of the New York and Northern, and Managing Director of the Atchison and Santa Fé. He was engaged as director and capitalist in many enterprises in various parts of the Union. He was a member of practically all the chief clubs of the city, whether devoted to social purposes or to out-door sports, and was generally and sincerely beloved
