John Greenough was one of the numerous Americans who supplemented a successful business career by active participation in philanthropic service and cultural research. Retired from his banking and Stock Exchange activities during the thirty-six past years, he served as director in the Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor, in the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and as President and honorary president of the American Geographical Society. Holding the title of the oldest Harvard graduate (he was awarded his diploma in 1865), he could look back to his own participation in the collegiate races as member of the ’Varsity crew.
