Century Memorial

The death of Thomas L. Greene, in the prime of his manhood, was a real loss to the community and to this Club, in which he had many friends. Born in Albany, in 1851, he entered the office of his father, one of the pioneer managers of the Boston & Albany R. R. system, and from there passed to the West Shore road. Later he became a writer on finance and business for the New York Evening Post, and in 1895 was appointed Auditor of the Manhattan Trust Company. On the organization of the Audit Company of New York, he became its Vice-President and General Manager, in which very responsible post he had ample scope for his trained intelligence, sound judgment, and acute reasoning, to which his sterling integrity and impartial temperament gave peculiar value. His volume on Corporation Finance is a model of comprehensive knowledge, searching analysis and original generalization, adding to the authority he possessed among those familiar with his rare attainments. In a time of some confusion and much illusion his mind worked with great precision and with a singular grasp of essential principles. In private life he had the charm of modest strength and sincere kindliness.
