Merrill Edward Gates was eight years president of Rutgers College and eight years president at Amherst, and held numerous honorary degrees from other American institutions of learning. During most of his active life he interested himself in Indian affairs, serving for twenty-eight consecutive years on the United States Board of Indian Commissioners.
