Century Memorial

Frederic Gallatin came of interesting stock. His grandfather was the Gallatin who foreshadowed the Shermans and Mellons of a later day in the Treasury during the first decade of the nineteenth century, his great-grandfather on the maternal side commanded a ship when Havana was captured from the Spaniards in 1762. Mr. Gallatin had himself seen and participated in a series of epoch-making changes in American life and history; graduating from college as he did in 1861, knowing well the provincial New York City of that bygone day, the mixture of haughtiness and simplicity in the old Fifth Avenue, and the jumble of ill-assorted, grimy buildings which gave to the older Wall Street an atmosphere difficult nowadays for even the imagination to reproduce.
