Century Memorial

A notable surgeon passed away in Lewis Atterbury Stimson, the father of our fellow-member, Henry L. Stimson. Graduating from Yale in 1863, he served the following years in the Civil War as a captain and aide-de-camp. Then he studied at the Bellevue Medical College, which later became the medical department of the New York University, where Dr. Stimson was made successively professor of physiology, of anatomy, and of surgery. In 1898, he was appointed to the chair of surgery in the Cornell Medical School, which he was so instrumental in establishing. He was also consulting surgeon at the New York, Bellevue, and other hospitals, besides conducting an important private practice. He was the author of several standard works on surgery. Dr. Stimson was a man of social distinction, popular with friends and patients, and one of our famed yachtsmen. Recently after more than one trip to the war districts of France, this brave and stalwart man was about to resume his chair of surgery—for the need of him was urgent—when death took him.
