Century Memorial

Charles Fairchild was graduated from Harvard in 1858, served in the Civil War as First Lieutenant of the First Wisconsin Regiment and afterwards was Secretary to his brother, General [Lucius] Fairchild of Wisconsin. The greater part of his life he devoted to banking and mercantile pursuits. In The Century he belonged to the group of men associated with Clarence King. Mr. King was attracted to Mr. Fairchild by his warm, genial temperament and his love of art. His selection of pictures shows his taste to have been discriminating. Mr. King and Mr. Fairchild were together a great deal in London in the early ’80’s, associating intimately with Abbey, Sargent, and Frank Millet. He was one of the first of the Bostonians to appreciate justly the work of John La Farge.
