James Bruyn Andrews was a Centurion of long standing, having been elected forty-seven years ago. He was an amateur and critic of quality, and in the study of folk-lore stood high as an authority. He was a New Yorker and a practising lawyer of high standing, a graduate of Yale. His life was spent in large measure over the sea, partly in the consular service, but latterly and for a long time in the care of feeble health. Though his work as a scholar was frequently interrupted, it had sterling merit and he received recognition from the French Academy for his masterly researches. His work was its own sufficient reward and in its enjoyment, without haste but almost without rest, he lived to the end.
