Leander T. Chamberlain

Leander Trowbridge Chamberlain, for many years a familiar figure at our meetings. His had been a life of many interests. He was a graduate of Yale and of the Andover Theological Seminary. In the Civil War he was a paymaster, and judge advocate of the United States Pacific Squadron. He became pastor of the New England Congregational Church in Chicago, where after the fire of 1871 he rendered good service as superintendent of the northern relief division. At a later time he was pastor of a church in Brooklyn, where he founded the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences. He was active in missionary work and also in international arbitration, and was deeply interested in scientific collections. He wrote works upon the History of the Bible and also upon questions of state polity.
