Gilbert M. Speir, like his brother [Archibald W. Speir], had lifelong associations with The Century. He joined it in 1878 when twenty-six years of age, being only five years out of Columbia College. He entered the legal profession and was engaged in important cases. Of late years he was not active in his profession or in The Century.
