Gouverneur M. Smith belonged to a family which for over a century was prominent in the medical profession in New York City. He was a graduate of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, served in the Navy during the Civil War, was afterward visiting physician at the New York and Presbyterian Hospitals, was prominent in social circles, and was a gentleman of most courteous disposition and engaging manners, who won the friendship of all who were thrown into his society, and was always a welcome visitor to The Century.
