Walter Shirlaw was a Scot by birth and in his artistic tradition continued loyal to his native land, preferring genre of a somewhat Scottish type for his most serious work. But he arrived in America during early childhood, spent sixty-nine of his seventy-one years on these shores and, by education, temperament and enthusiasm, was a representative American painter; he was a man of renown as decorator, illustrator and teacher in his much loved profession. At his best he was an artist of very high rank, exhibiting a creative imagination and strong, broad, finished technique. During twenty-four years he came and went among us, greatly beloved and cherished by the inner circle of his friends.
