George Richard Schieffelin had been a member of this Association for seventeen years. He was born in New York City, and was a graduate of Columbia College, and a lawyer by profession, as was his father before him. He was in active practice until a few years before his death.
Mr. Schieffelin was very much interested in Church work, being a warden of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Manhattanville, in succession to his father, and for many years vestryman and treasurer of St. Andrew’s Dune Church, Southampton. He was also legal adviser for the New York City Mission Society for thirty-two years.
Mr. Schieffelin was a member of several clubs, and had served as an officer in patriotic and historical societies where his advice was always welcome.
He was a man of more than ordinary ability, with a quiet influence for good on all those with whom he came in contact, and his kindly and sterling character endeared him to a large circle of friends and to all those who met him professionally.
