Allen Thorndike Rice was a young man of great culture and literary enterprise. As editor of the North American Review he wielded and directed a trenchant pen, and brought the magazine he controlled into wide notice through the vigorous and caustic articles it contained. Having been appointed Minister Plenipotentiary of the United States to the Court of St. Petersburg, he was on the eve of departure to this new post of duty when he was seized with the sudden illness which terminated his life.
