Century Memorial
James N. Paulding, although not well known to most of our members by reason of his residence at a distance from the city, was entitled to the high regard of all of us from his character and his services to the country. He was the son of James Kirke Paulding, the Secretary of the Navy under President Van Buren; and a nephew of Captain Parrott, the inventor of the famous Parrott gun. During the War of the Rebellion, in connection with Gouverneur and Peter Kemble, he took charge of the West Point iron foundry, where much of the ordnance used by the Federal forces was cast.
He was a gentleman who lived up to the highest standards, studious, cultivated, affable in manner, much given to foreign travel, and thoroughly respected in the community in which he lived.
