William Starbuck Mayo, though educated as a physician, achieved an enviable reputation as an author of delightful books of romantic travel and adventure, which rank with those of the late Herman Melville in originality and interest, and met with great popular favor. Besides contributing frequently to magazine literature, he wrote a work on natural philosophy, and was a successful inventor. He was one of our oldest and most respected members, and although with advancing years he was seldom seen here, we remember the intellectual grace and old-time courtesy which characterized him and made him one of the most interesting of men.
