Century Memorial
Frederick Street Hoppin, seventy-two years old at death, and one of our members for forty years, was a man of singular refinement and culture. He was one of that famous group which graduated from Yale in 1856. His uncle founded the Art School of that University, and he was a first cousin of the Hoppin numbered among the members both of the Sketch Club and our own original forty-two. A member of the bar, his tastes were literary and artistic. Much travel trained his incisive mind to keen appreciation of what was highest and best in those spheres. His friendships were many and choice, his judgments of men and manners penetrating and influential. With a keen sense of humor and remarkable powers of characterization, he was a charming companion, though a fearless analyst of the passing phases of society. Many of his sayings were winged words in the circles amid which his life was spent. He was a devoted and lifelong citizen of his birthplace, the historic town of Providence, a marked man in a remarkable community.
