Samuel D. Babcock

Samuel Dudley [sic] Babcock, born of a long line of New England ancestry, reaching back to within a few years of The Mayflower, brought to this city in his early youth the energy, the intelligence, and the sterling moral qualities of his family. The variety of the enterprises in which he had an active and influential part was very great. Real estate, banking, insurance, the telephone, steamships, railroads, trust companies, shared his interest and his guidance. He was deeply respected in every walk of life. His long experience and sound judgment were joined with remarkable foresight and courage, and in the later years of his life he was probably the trusted counsellor in more kinds of extensive business than any other man in the city. He was a discriminating lover of art, and actively connected with many of the organizations for its promotion. He was fond of outdoor life, and regular in its wholesome occupations. A strong, kindly, faithful man, he left a deep impress on the life of the community, and a grateful memory with those who had the privilege of association with him.
