Adam Badeau, who, before the Civil War, was a writer for the press, and gave evidence of literary facility, achieved fame and fortune through his connection with General Grant, upon whose staff he served as military secretary during the last year of the War. He was rewarded for his services, by the characteristic generosity of his chief, with rank in the army and important diplomatic appointments, the most lucrative of which was that of Consul-General to London, which he filled for many years.
His principal contribution to literature was the Military History of General Grant, in three volumes; and his relations to that distinguished soldier during his life, and with his family after his death, made him a conspicuous figure before the American public.
