Century Memorial
Jasper F. Cropsey, a veteran in Century membership, was prominent in that old group of American artists who fifty years ago set the standards of taste and controlled the artistic movement of the town. He combined architecture with painting, and designed many important buildings, among them the stations on the Sixth Avenue Elevated Railroad.
In his early years he studied in Rome and achieved early success by the high quality of his work, becoming a member of the National Academy at the age of twenty. For several years he maintained a studio in London, and exhibited at the Royal Academy, where his paintings were received with the highest favor and reward. They were of admirable quality and gave him a deserved reputation at home and abroad. The great advance in appreciation of the world’s best work in art, and increased knowledge of it, has perhaps obscured the memory and reputations of those who early ministered at its altars here, but a debt of gratitude is due them for the inspiration they gave, and their earnest efforts to promote and maintain it.
