Frederick J. Wiley’s longing for an artistic career of his own led him many years ago to give up a lucrative commercial position as draftsman and general decorator in order to engage in landscape painting. His work was distinctive and original, but it did not achieve the distinction of wide public vogue; for the most part, the appreciation which he won came from his artist friends. Quite apart from his work with the brush, he was a man of broad and classic culture.
