Century Memorial
Charles Augustus Stoddard belonged to a group of clergymen, very familiar to the reading public of four or five decades ago but much more unfamiliar in these days, who alternated their work in pulpit or parish with published editorial comment, signed or unsigned, and with descriptive books of travel. Dr. Stoddard followed in these avocations in the footsteps of the two brothers Prime, well known in their day and with one of whom he was related by marriage and associated by editorial work on the New York Observer. But his own activities covered a broader field than that of these predecessors. He was for twenty-four years at the head of a New York church and long served as executive head of nearly half a dozen religious and charitable institutions.
