The Century entrance halls were once lined with a dreamy panorama of mythical imagery, including Pegasus flying atop the member board. This exhibition, born from happenstance discovery of photographs in the Century Archives, presents the outline, timeline, and eccentric cast of characters involved in this quintessentially Centurion tale of grandiose intentions, creative whimsy, prohibitive delays, and noble folly.

As of 2015, twenty-nine members of the Century Association had been awarded a Nobel Prize, beginning with Theodore Roosevelt’s Peace Prize in 1906 for brokering the end of the Russo-Japanese War. Centurions have been recognized in each of the six Nobel Prize categories (Peace, Literature, Economics, Physics, Chemistry, and Physiology or Medicine), with three or more laureates in each group. Their biographies and prize-worthy achievements are recounted in a publication that accompanied an exhibition at the clubhouse in September 2014.

Particularly as Presidents, Supreme Court justices, and Cabinet Members, by FREDERIC S. NATHAN. Though it was written by a Centurion for Centurions, it should be on almost anybody’s shelf of books on American history, particularly pertaining to World War II.

There is no shortage of Centurions who have run successfully (and successfully) for public office. A coproduction of the Committee on the Archives and the Century Association Archives Foundation, this exhibition was curated from the collection of CAAF trustee Ellen M. Iseman.
